Niamh O’Neill

When I was eight years old at primary school, everyone in my class was given a tree to plant.
My father and I planted the tree that evening in the garden. It was small and narrow, almost more like a twig than a tree!

That day, my tree and I were around the same height when stood side by side. The tree thrived in it’s new home.
Through the years, we competed with our heights and eventually I gave up at 5’10”!
The tree has become this enormous strong presence in the garden where I grew up and it is amazing to see how far it has come from the little branch it began as.

I think “my” tree will always make me stop and look back to my eight year old self and appreciate how far I have gone in my own life, and we’re both still growing!
